In our efforts to have all Bloomfield children healthy, educated, nurtured, and supported by their families and their community, the Alliance for Bloomfield’s Children (ABC) has an ongoing commitment to racial equity, diversity, and inclusion – both internally, through our committee work, and externally, through our work in the Bloomfield community.
With the generous support of the William Caspar Graustein Memorial Fund, we have established an agenda to achieve racial equity in Bloomfield. ABC aspires to increase our community’s commitment to a racially just and equitable Bloomfield. We are working strategically and collaboratively to:
· Build a racial equity lens into our organization's strategic planning, policy and priority setting process, and issue committee strategy and implementation work,
· Build pathways to increase participation and leadership of diverse constituencies in Bloomfield, and amplify the voices of diverse participants within the broader movement,
· Actively challenge policies that perpetuate systems of oppression and inequities in education,
· Engage in and support the efforts of those most affected by education system inequities,
· Strengthen our role as an effective ally in creating opportunities for the Bloomfield community to collectively explore and gain deeper understanding of key concepts including cultural, structural and institutional racism, white privilege, racial equity and ally-ship especially in the context of the education of young children.
We seek to achieve our goals by:
· Building awareness about the impact of structural racism and working toward policies that will help to eliminate structural racism in the Bloomfield community,
· Celebrating differences among individuals across multiple dimensions including, but not limited to, race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, physical ability, religion and socioeconomic status.
We believe that bringing together individuals with different backgrounds and life experiences is necessary for collective action and social change. Additionally, we believe that these efforts will enhance our ability to increase opportunities for all children to succeed. Lastly, we are committed to establishing and maintaining a culture of inclusion and equitable relationships. This is possible when those most affected by structural barriers to equality are leading the conversation and are supported by others.
